Cellulose acetate plastic

  • Apr 01, 2025

Cellulose acetate plastic is a chemical substance that can be used to prepare solvent-based adhesives to bond plastic products such as glasses and toys. Store in a cool, ventilated and dry warehouse. Protect from rain and sun.

Name

Chinese name: Cellulose acetate plastic, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate

Abbreviation: CA

English name: Cellulose acetate

Physical and chemical properties

It is a chemically modified natural polymer obtained by esterifying the hydroxyl groups in cellulose molecules with acetate. Its performance depends on the degree of acetylation. Commercially available products can be divided into general cellulose acetate (acetyl content 37% to 40%). Plasticizers are often added for injection molding parts such as toothbrush handles and brushes. Cellulose acetate with high acetyl content (acetyl content 40% to 42%) is white granular, powdery or cottony solid. It is stable to light, not easy to burn, stable in dilute acid, gasoline, mineral oil and vegetable oil, swells in chloroform, soluble in acetone, methyl acetate, etc., can be corroded by dilute alkali solution, has the advantages of toughness, transparency, good gloss, good melt fluidity, and easy molding and processing.

Preparation method

It is a product of purified short cotton linters activated by acetic acid, acetylated with a mixture of acetic acid and acetic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric acid catalyst, and then hydrolyzed with dilute acetic acid to the required degree of esterification. According to the degree of esterification, it can be divided into cellulose monoacetate, cellulose diester acid and cellulose triacetate. Different degrees of esterification have different properties and uses. The degree of esterification has a great influence on the solubility. The lower the degree of esterification, the higher the solubility in polar solvents, but the lower the solubility in non-polar solvents. Cellulose triacetate with an acetic acid content of 60%-61.5% is insensitive to water because it contains less hydroxyl groups and is soluble in dichloromethane, etc. Cellulose acetate with an acetic acid content of 51%-58% is cellulose acetate used in general industry and is soluble in acetone.
