Phenolic Molding Compound is abbreviated as PMC, also known as phenolic plastic sealing material, bakelite powder, etc. It is mainly used in automotive motors, power tools, household appliances, etc.
Phenolic molding compound (PMC for short) has a very broad meaning, usually including 40-60% phenolic resin, trade name NOVOLAC or RESOL), fillers (wood powder, mica, CaCO_3, glass fiber, etc.) and other additives. This type of product is a thermosetting plastic, that is, the resin can be cured by increasing temperature and pressure. The fully cured product cannot be changed by heating, that is, it cannot be melted again.
(1). Phenolic resin Phenolic resin is used as a binder in phenolic molding compound. The basic requirements for the resin are: 1. It can meet the specific performance requirements of molded products; 2. It must have good flow characteristics, that is, it must be in a non-stick solid or semi-solid state at room temperature and pressure. It has good fluidity under the pressing conditions, so that the molding material can evenly fill the mold cavity; 3. Suitable curing speed, less by-products during the curing process, and good processability (such as good miscibility with various solvents).
(2) Reinforcement material The reinforcement material plays a skeleton role. It mainly uses fibrous reinforcement materials. In addition, short-cut fiber mats, fiber fabrics or ropes are also used as reinforcement materials. Fiber-type reinforcement materials include slit wire, untwisted roving, twisted yarn, high silica fiber, carbon fiber, asbestos fiber, nylon fiber, and aramid fiber.
(3) Auxiliary agents Auxiliary agents include glass fiber surface treatment agents, fillers, diluents, release agents and pigments. Glass fiber surface treatment agents are used to improve the bonding between resin and reinforcement materials and the interface state between resin and fiber. For phenolic molding compounds, the commonly used glass fiber surface treatment agent is KH-550. Fillers are mainly powdered fillers, which are used to improve the fluidity of molding compounds, reduce the shrinkage of molded products, improve the surface gloss of products, the uniformity of product quality and give products some special properties. Diluents are used to reduce the viscosity of the resin and improve the impregnation properties of the resin.
