Flame retardant masterbatch

  • Apr 01, 2025

Flame retardant masterbatch is also called flame retardant masterbatch, fireproof masterbatch. It is a type of product produced to achieve the fire protection requirements of plastics and rubber products.

Material composition

With the advancement of science and technology and the improvement of living standards, polymer materials, especially synthetic polymers: such as plastics and rubber, are becoming more and more important in people's lives, and their applications are showing a trend of expanding year by year. However, most organic polymer materials have different degrees of flammability in the air. In order to realize their application in many industries such as military, aerospace, transportation, electricity and civil use, flame retardant modification has become a new topic. At present, the more ideal method for flame retardant modification of plastics is often to improve the fire resistance of plastics by adding flame retardants or flame retardant masterbatches.

Flame retardant masterbatch (bromine/halogen series), also known as flame retardant masterbatch, is one of the best flame retardant products in plastics, rubber and other resins today. Flame retardant masterbatch (masterbatch) is a granular product made by mixing, extruding and granulating a variety of flame retardant ingredients on the basis of flame retardants, modification and synergy, and through a twin-screw or three-screw extruder. Unlike flame retardants, flame retardant masterbatch has many advantages such as easy addition to resin, clean and hygienic, high flame retardant efficiency, small addition amount, small effect on the mechanical properties of resin, and is not prone to delamination, pattern, precipitation and other undesirable phenomena after addition, saving manpower, material cost and time. Generally speaking, the dispersibility, fluidity, compatibility with resin, thermal stability and weather resistance of flame retardant masterbatch in resin are much better than ordinary flame retardants. In addition, the flame retardant efficiency and performance (cost performance) of properly formulated flame retardant masterbatch are also much better than ordinary flame retardants. Therefore, flame retardant masterbatch has become one of the best choices for flame retardant plastic products to achieve fire protection requirements, and has become an effective substitute for flame retardant powder.

Features

1. Easy to use: Most flame retardant masterbatches (masterbatches) are tablet-sized particles of flake or strip size, which is just the same size as general plastic particles, which improves their mutual compatibility, makes it easier to disperse and add, and is hygienic and reduces volatile waste.

2. Good compatibility with resin: In general, flame retardant masterbatches (masterbatches) are specially treated to improve their compatibility with plastic resins, so that even if the amount added to the resin is large, it is not easy to cause stratification, frosting, patterns and other problems.

3. Reduce costs and increase product added value: The addition of flame retardant masterbatches (masterbatches) often makes general plastics have or approach the application requirements of engineering plastics, improves product added value, and reduces raw material costs.

Classification

Due to the advantages of flame retardant masterbatch (masterbatch) in flame retardant efficiency, environmental protection, improved production efficiency, convenience and many other aspects, it has become an effective substitute for traditional flame retardants and is widely used in various aspects of plastic granulation, extrusion, injection molding, etc.

The flame retardant masterbatches that are currently being promoted and applied are mainly halogen (Br, Cl), phosphorus (red phosphorus, phosphorus compounds, etc.), nitrogen (commonly known as intumescent flame retardant masterbatch) and inorganic flame retardant masterbatch (aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, etc.).

Halogen flame retardant masterbatch (masterbatch) is the most respected flame retardant masterbatch in most resins today. The reason is that its own organicity makes it have a better affinity with plastics, so the mechanical properties of the finished product decrease less and the flame retardant efficiency is high. The amount added to the resin is small and cost-effective. The disadvantage is that some of them are biologically toxic and are prohibited in some international standards. And due to poor environmental performance, especially in Europe, there is a trend of being eliminated.

Phosphorus-based flame retardant masterbatch is also a widely used product. Its flame retardant efficiency is even higher than that of halogen-based in some resins. However, it has many disadvantages such as poor color coordination, poor compatibility, low oxygen index, and low applicability to processing technology, and is often only used in special industries. Due to its low flame retardant efficiency and easy "foaming" and other inadaptability, the application range of intumescent flame retardant masterbatch is even narrower. Inorganic flame retardant masterbatch, such as magnesium hydroxide. Its flame retardant products are environmentally friendly, do not emit toxic gases, have low smoke volume, and have a high oxygen index for flame retardant plastics. However, due to its excessively high addition amount to achieve the ideal flame retardant standard and the natural incompatibility between inorganic and organic substances, the finished products obtained after modification are still difficult to meet the needs of most industries, so its promotion is subject to certain restrictions. It is believed that after the process is improved, it can also be gradually recognized by the market based on its environmental advantages.

Polyethylene series flame retardant masterbatch

According to the different processing performance and processing technology of PE, there are a series of polyethylene flame retardant masterbatches such as drawing grade, extrusion grade, film grade, coating grade, and antistatic grade. It completely replaces powdered flame retardants and has the characteristics of high concentration, good dispersibility, simplified production process, and high cost performance. Thus, it can solve most of the flame retardant problems of PE molding and meet the needs of different products. It is widely used in polyethylene dense mesh building safety nets, Christmas trees, artificial turf, polyethylene building threading pipes, mining pipes, cables, foam boards, automotive wiring harnesses, flame retardant tarpaulins, flame retardant films, fireproof cloth coatings, electronic packaging, etc.

Polypropylene series flame retardant masterbatch

According to the different processing performance and processing technology of PP, there are a series of polypropylene flame retardant masterbatches such as drawing grade, extrusion grade, film grade, antistatic grade, and injection molding grade. It has the advantages of high concentration, good dispersibility, simplified production process, and high cost performance, and completely replaces powdered flame retardants. Thus, it can solve most of the flame retardant problems of PP molding and meet the needs of different products. Widely used in polypropylene high-strength wire, flat wire, artificial wigs, electrical safety belts, artificial grass, sports nets, PP automotive wiring harnesses, plates, mining mesh belts, strapping belts, electronic injection molding parts, electrical skeletons, electrical housings, European sockets, etc.
