From pollution to solutions: A global assessment of marine litter and plastic pollution

  • Mar 31, 2025

On October 21, 2021, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released the report "From Pollution to Solutions: A Global Assessment of Marine Litter and Plastic Pollution".

Main content

The report shows that 85% of marine litter is plastic. The report warns that by 2040, the amount of plastic waste flowing into marine areas will nearly triple, with 23-37 million tons of plastic waste added to the ocean each year, equivalent to 50 kilograms of plastic waste for every meter of coastline in the world.

The report said that all marine life, from plankton, shellfish to birds, turtles and mammals, are at serious risk of poisoning, behavioral disorders, starvation and suffocation. Corals, mangroves and seagrass beds are also overwhelmed by plastic waste, depriving them of oxygen and light. The human body is also vulnerable to plastic pollution in water bodies in many ways, which can cause hormonal changes, developmental disorders, reproductive abnormalities and cancer.

The report emphasizes that plastic is also about climate issues. If a life cycle analysis of plastic is conducted, the greenhouse gases released by plastic in 2015 were 1.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, and this figure is expected to increase to approximately 6.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050, accounting for 15% of the global carbon budget.

The report said that marine debris and plastic pollution have a significant impact on the global economy. In 2018, the impact of global marine plastic pollution on tourism, fisheries and aquaculture, combined with other costs (such as cleanup), the overall economic cost was estimated to be at least US$6-19 billion. It is estimated that by 2040, if governments require companies to pay for waste management costs based on expected quantities and recyclability, companies may face a financial risk of US$100 billion per year. Large amounts of plastic waste will also lead to an increase in illegal waste disposal in various countries.
