Quanling Diary: Mendes by the River (March 31)

Amazon has a huge water system, so far, big and small rivers are still the most important transportation roads and the basis of survival for local people. Today we are going to visit a village by the river. A child's curious, kind eyes are an invitation.

At least half of this village of more than 100 families have never been to Macapa, the state capital, half an hour's drive away, let alone any other state in Brazil that is a flight away. So the arrival of a group of Chinese was greeted with curious glances from every window.

"Ten thousand national flags" at the door of the general drying clothes, and the children running by the river show that this is a village with a big family tradition.

A young man with beautiful white teeth invited us to visit his home.

Children of all sizes filled this 30-square-meter home with "wood walls and tin roofs" with vitality.

We finally meet the real head of the family -- Mendez, 26, who lives with his wife and eight children. We had been invited over by his younger brother, who had split up the family. The so-called separation of the family is to divide the house that their father left them in half with a wardrobe. But he had to support his family of 10 on his own. In the village, women take care of the family and do not go out to work. Mendez inherited his father's business of fishing shrimp and making Acai, the traditional Amazon food, earning just enough money each month to cover the family's expenses.

Mendez offered to teach me how to catch shrimp, but I didn't realize that shrimp fishing would be boring and time-consuming. You put your shrimp basket in the river and wait for three hours. You're lucky. Mendez says there are fewer shrimp in the river now than when he was a boy, because people are constantly fishing for a living. It has become difficult to get a harvest on his doorstep, so he has to take his dinghy further upstream. But he did not have a boat yet, so he had to borrow it from his brother. A boat costs about 1,700 yuan. He can't get the money together yet, and that's not even the most important thing.

The people of the Amazon are used to letting the river make decisions, and dealing with a constantly changing and moving river is part of their life. During the rainy season the river widens so much that it rises so rapidly that they need to build their homes on high wooden shelves, and the passageways between them are high wooden trestles. Mendez's wooden walkway has broken down in many places. The roof tiles have aged and the house has started to leak. He has had to remove them and replace them with tin tiles. During the rainy season, the house gets very hot. He really wants to rebuild the house. It would be better if it could be built into two floors. It will cost about 7,000 yuan, which may take him six months or more to save.

His younger brother, Mendez Jr., has less trouble than his older brother and begins to perform tree-climbing tricks for our camera. Asaigo is 10 meters up in the tree, he ties his feet with nylon rope, gently one by one, to the top of the tree in less than a minute. He cut some fruit for me, even though it was not yet the ripe season.

Acai is an important fruit in the Indian diet, and the Amazons use it to make drinks, ice cream, and condiments. The Indian soldiers made sure to drink a cup of Acai juice to replenish their energy before setting out. This is the first time I've tasted unprocessed Acai fruit. With its thin flesh and slightly bitter taste, it was a far cry from the delicious juices I had tasted at the market before. Speaking as an expert, Liu, who is based in Brazil, told me that the fruit needs to be soaked in water for five hours and undergo a series of complex processes before it becomes delicious.

The applause his uncle received as he climbed the tree inspired Mendez's 6-year-old son to perform, and he climbed to a height of 5 meters. Asked what he wanted to do in the future, Mendez said he wanted to fish like his father.

The family by the river, the children's entertainment is related to the river. They jumped off the quay five or six meters above the river bank and surfaced triumphantly, giggling at us as we screamed. And the grown-ups in the village kept urging them to do it again.

The girl's toy is a piece of plastic wrapping paper with bubbles, and she twists and turns the paper to make a firecracker sound. Yan Man, our director, told her that she could break the bubbles one by one, and the girl was excited to learn. Their simple happiness is really contagious.

Mendez isn't sure his son will be able to follow in his footsteps. The river in front of his house has changed a lot since he was a child. The tide is constantly collapsing its banks. The river is now more than 30 meters wide, up from five or six meters 20 years ago. Maybe one day, the river will take away their house. But who knows when that will happen? It is simply a fate that must be accepted by the people of the river.

We took pictures with the Mendez family, and the neighbors rushed to take pictures of us with their phones. A bunch of Chinese with cameras, how far is your home from the Amazon River?
