ABS engineering plastics

  • Apr 08, 2025

ABS engineering plastics, also known as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, is a commonly used thermoplastic engineering plastic.

ABS is a terpolymer of acrylonitrile (A), butadiene (B), and styrene (S). The relative content of the three monomers can be changed arbitrarily to make various resins. ABS belongs to thermoplastic synthetic polymer resins, which are light yellow granular or beaded opaque resins. It is an amorphous polymer and a non-crystalline material. ABS has the common properties of the three components. A makes it chemically resistant and heat resistant, and has a certain surface hardness. B makes it highly elastic and tough. S makes it have the processing and molding characteristics of thermoplastics and improves electrical properties. ABS is non-toxic, odorless, has low water absorption, and has good comprehensive physical and mechanical properties, such as excellent electrical properties, wear resistance, chemical resistance and surface gloss, etc. It has high mechanical strength and good "hard, tough, steel" comprehensive properties. It has good balance performance, dimensional stability, can be cut to suit special needs, and is easy to process and shape.

The disadvantages of ABS are poor weather resistance, poor heat resistance, and flammability. Its main processes are steel mold casting, injection molding, and TPO injection molding.

Effective control of the three components of ABS enables designers to design its elasticity according to the needs of the product. And compared with other thermoplastics, the cost is lower. Therefore, ABS is a general-purpose engineering plastic, also known as "general plastic", with a variety of varieties, mostly used in household products and white products, and has a wide range of applications in manufacturing industries such as machinery, electrical, textiles, automobiles, aircraft, ships, and chemical industries.

Introduction

ABS engineering plastics are used in thin-walled and complex-shaped products, and can maintain their excellent performance and maintain the moldability of materials composed of plastics and an ester. The biggest disadvantage of ABS engineering plastics is that it is heavy and has poor thermal conductivity. Its molding temperature is taken from the temperature between the two raw materials, that is, 240-265 degrees. If the temperature is too high, ABS will decompose, and if it is too low, the fluidity of PC material will be poor.

Development History

Fast Development

China's research on ABS engineering plastics began in the 1960s and has developed rapidly. According to statistics, the total consumption of plastic alloys (including modified resins) in China is about 1.2 million to 1.4 million tons, while China's supply is less than 600,000 tons, and the annual import volume is as high as 900,000 tons; and China's ABS engineering plastics (mainly blended resins and modified resins) are mainly used in home appliances, electronics, automobiles and other industries. Compared with developed countries, China's plastic alloy application market still has a lot of room for expansion.

Huge market demand potential

With the continued rapid development of China's economy, China's ABS engineering plastics market demand potential is huge in the next few years, especially the rapid growth of electronic communications, automobiles, and construction industries, which will drive the rapid development of China's ABS engineering plastics industry. It is estimated that by 2008, China's total demand for the five major engineering plastics will reach 1 million tons, and the demand for the five major synthetic resins will reach 52 million tons, making it one of the largest importers of ABS engineering plastics in the world.

Not yet formed a scale

Both the research and production of ABS engineering plastics in China are still in a scattered state, and have not yet formed a scale. The overall level of the industry is low, far from the advanced level abroad. In the structure of ABS engineering plastics production in China, the production of high value-added special ABS engineering plastics is almost blank, and the production is basically general ABS engineering plastics and modified products. In 2004, there were more than 300 ABS engineering plastics production enterprises in China. It is estimated that the production capacity of ABS engineering plastics (including modified granules) is 700,000 to 800,000 tons/year, and the output is about 600,000 tons/year. However, only 15% of them are large-scale enterprises, and the output of these 15% of enterprises accounts for more than 70% of the total output of ABS engineering plastics in China. Most of the enterprises are processing enterprises that produce ABS engineering plastics through plastic mixing and extrusion processes. The research and development and processing technology level of ABS engineering plastics in China needs to be improved.

Physical and Chemical Properties

Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is a general-purpose thermoplastic polymer. ABS has the following performance characteristics: good rigidity, high impact strength, heat resistance, low temperature resistance, chemical resistance, excellent mechanical strength and electrical properties, easy processing, good processing dimensional stability and surface gloss, easy coating and coloring, and can also be subjected to secondary processing such as metal spraying, electroplating, welding and bonding. Because the characteristics of ABS combine the characteristics of its three components, it has excellent comprehensive properties and has become one of the preferred plastics for electrical components, home appliances, computers and instruments.

ABS engineering plastics are generally opaque, light ivory in appearance, non-toxic, odorless, and have the characteristics of toughness, hardness and rigidity. They burn slowly, with a yellow flame and black smoke. After burning, the plastic softens and burns, giving off a special cinnamon smell, but there is no melting dripping phenomenon.

ABS engineering plastics have excellent comprehensive properties, including excellent impact strength, good dimensional stability, electrical properties, wear resistance, chemical resistance, dyeability, and good molding and machining. ABS resin is resistant to water, inorganic salts, alkalis and acids, insoluble in most alcohols and hydrocarbon solvents, but easily soluble in aldehydes, ketones, esters and certain chlorinated hydrocarbons. Disadvantages of ABS engineering plastics: low heat deformation temperature, flammable, and poor weather resistance.

ABS is a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, A represents acrylonitrile, B represents butadiene, and S represents styrene. ABS resin is the polymer with the largest output and the most widespread application. It organically unifies the various properties of PS, SAN, and BS, and has excellent mechanical properties with a balance of toughness, hardness, and rigidity.

PC/ABS, polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer and mixture, is a thermoplastic plastic made of polycarbonate and polyacrylonitrile (ABS) alloy. It combines the excellent properties of the two materials, the formability of ABS material and the mechanical properties, impact strength, heat resistance, and UV resistance of PC. It can be widely used in automotive interior parts, office machines, communication equipment, household appliances, and lighting equipment.

Performance

General Performance

ABS engineering plastics are opaque ivory-colored granules, and its products can be colored in various colors and have high gloss. The relative density of ABS is about 1.05, and the water absorption rate is low. ABS has good bonding with other materials and is easy to print, coat, and plate. The oxygen index of ABS is 18~20. It is a flammable polymer. The flame is yellow, there is black smoke, and it emits a special cinnamon smell.

Mechanical properties

ABS has excellent mechanical properties, and its impact strength is excellent. It can be used at extremely low temperatures: ABS has excellent wear resistance, good dimensional stability, and oil resistance. It can be used for bearings under medium loads and speeds. The creep resistance of ABS is greater than that of PSF and PC, but less than that of PA and POM. The bending strength and compression strength of ABS are relatively poor among plastics. The mechanical properties of ABS are greatly affected by temperature.

Thermal properties

The heat deformation temperature of ABS is 93~118¡æ, and the product can be increased by about 10¡æ after annealing. ABS can still show a little toughness at -40¡æ and can be used in the temperature range of -40~100¡æ.

Electrical properties

ABS has good electrical insulation and is almost unaffected by temperature, humidity and frequency, and can be used in most environments.

Environmental performance

ABS is not affected by water, inorganic salts, alkalis and various acids, but is soluble in ketones, aldehydes and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It will produce stress cracking when corroded by glacial acetic acid, vegetable oil, etc. ABS has poor weather resistance and is easily degraded under the action of ultraviolet light; after half a year outdoors, the impact strength drops by half.

Modified ABS material

ABS is a "tough, hard and rigid" engineering plastic with easy-to-obtain raw materials, good comprehensive performance, low price and wide application.
