Blowing ratio

  • Mar 28, 2025

The blow ratio is one of the key control points in the blow molding process. When the size and weight of the tube blank are constant, the larger the size of the part, the larger the blow ratio of the tube blank. Although a larger blow ratio can save materials, the rigidity and strength of the part are reduced. If the blow ratio is too small, the plastic consumption increases, the effective volume of the part decreases, the wall thickness increases, the cooling time becomes longer, and the cost increases. The choice of blow ratio should be determined based on the type and properties of the material, the shape and size of the part, and the size of the tube blank.

Blow ratio

The blow ratio is one of the key control points in the blow film production process. It refers to

(1) The ratio of the maximum transverse diameter of the blow mold cavity to the outer diameter of the tubular blank during hollow blow molding.

(2) The ratio of the diameter of the blown tube film to the diameter of the die during blow molding of thin films.

Appropriate Blowing Ratio

The blowing ratio is the transverse expansion multiple of the film, which is actually the transverse stretching of the film. Stretching will have a certain degree of orientation effect on the plastic molecules. As the blowing ratio increases, the film becomes thinner. Although it can save materials, the film is prone to wrinkles and the strength of the film is reduced. If the blowing ratio is too small, the consumption will increase, the effective volume of the product will become smaller, and the product will become thicker, the cooling time will be longer, and the cost will increase. Therefore, the blowing ratio and the traction ratio should be properly matched according to the type and nature of the material, the shape and size of the product, and the size of the tube blank to produce good products. For example, in general, the blowing ratio of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film should be controlled between 2.5-3.0.
