Compression molding method

  • Apr 11, 2025

Compression molding is the main method for thermosetting plastic molding. The plastic is placed in a mold at the molding temperature, and then the mold is closed and pressurized to form and solidify it. It is also called compression molding or compression molding. Thermoplastic plastics are sometimes also molded using this method. ¢Ù Thermosetting plastics: The raw material is placed in the mold cavity, and under pressure, it changes from solid to semi-liquid and fills the mold cavity to form. As the cross-linking reaction deepens, the semi-fluid gradually changes to solid and is demolded to become a product. ¢Ú Thermoplastic plastics: Since no cross-linking reaction occurs, after the raw material flows into the mold cavity, the mold must be cooled to solidify before it can be demolded to become a product.

The main advantages of compression molding are that it can mold products with larger planes and use multi-groove molds for mass production. The disadvantages are long production cycles, low efficiency, and the inability to mold products that require high dimensional accuracy. Especially when used for thermoplastics, the mold needs to be heated and cooled alternately, and the cycle is longer. The plastics used are: phenolic, amino, unsaturated polyester, polyimide, etc. Among them, phenolic and amino plastics are the most widely used. Molded products are mainly used for mechanical parts, electrical insulation parts and daily necessities, such as switches, telephone parts, clock housings, electrical housings, buttons, etc.
