PVC cling film is polyvinyl chloride. During the production process, a large amount of plasticizers are added. It is a type of plastic packaging product commonly used by people to preserve food. The plasticizers contained in PVC cling film are easy to precipitate. When brought into the human body with food, they will cause certain harm to the human body and even cause cancer. There is no problem with PVC cling film being used to preserve fresh fruits and vegetables. Compared with other cling films, it is cheaper and many families cannot do without them. PVC cling film has better viscosity, is not easy to unfold when rubbed by hand, is not easy to ignite, will go out after leaving the fire source, and has a pungent odor.
The significant characteristics of PE cling film are: PE cling film is widely used, PE cling film can wrap greasy food, and PE cling film can also be heated in a microwave oven at a temperature not exceeding 110 degrees Celsius. In addition, tips for distinguishing different types of cling film:
1. Look at the transparency. PE cling film has poor transparency, while PVC cling film has better transparency.
2. Pulling test. PE cling film has low pulling force, while PVC cling film has high pulling force.
3. Fire test. PE cling film is easy to burn, will drip oil, and has a candle smell; PVC cling film emits black smoke and produces a pungent smell when burned.
4. The self-adhesiveness of PVC cling film is much stronger than that of PE cling film.
Since PVC cling film is cheaper than other cling films, many families still choose PVC cling film. In fact, as long as PVC cling film is not heated and does not come into contact with greasy food, it is still fine to use it only to preserve fresh fruits and vegetables.
Most of the cling films and commonly used plastic bags sold on the market are made of ethylene masterbatch as raw materials. According to the different types of ethylene masterbatch, cling film can be divided into three categories.
The first is polyethylene, referred to as PE, which is mainly used for food packaging. The film used for fruits and vegetables we usually buy, including semi-finished products purchased in supermarkets, are all made of this material;
The second is polyvinyl chloride, referred to as PVC, which can also be used for food packaging, but it has a certain impact on human safety;
The third is polyvinylidene chloride, referred to as PVDC, which is mainly used for packaging of some cooked food, ham and other products.
The latest authoritative test shows that 15 of the 16 brands of PVC cling film commonly seen in the Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou markets contain the plasticizer DEHA, which is banned by the country. This plasticizer can penetrate from the cling film into the high-fat content food packaged at room temperature, causing great harm to the human endocrine system.
Food safety expert Dong Jinshi told reporters that the plasticizers allowed by the state are generally relatively stable at room temperature, but the DEHA banned by the state can be released from the plastic wrap at room temperature and penetrate into the food, especially when packaging foods with high fat content. The main hazard of this plasticizer is to affect the human endocrine system, leading to increased secretion of estrogen and reduced secretion of androgen, that is, precocious puberty in women and infertility in men, especially having a great impact on the genital development of infants and young children.
As early as 2005, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine issued an announcement emphasizing that it is forbidden for enterprises to use plasticizer DEHA to produce food plastic wrap. Beijing Kaifa Environmental Protection Technology Consulting Center recently purchased all brands of PVC plastic wrap sold on the market from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, a total of 16 brands, and sent them to the national authoritative testing agency. The test results were shocking-15 types of plastic wrap contained DEHA, which is expressly prohibited by the state. Among them, the lowest exceeded the detection line by 98 times, the highest exceeded the detection line by 472 times, and the average exceeded the detection line by more than 200 times.
Of the 16 brands of PVC cling film, 15 contained the plasticizer DEHA, which is banned by the state. The reporter's months-long investigation found that the PVC cling film production industry was shrouded in multiple layers of fog, and behind the fog was a lie involving the cling film industry and its upstream chemical industry.
According to the official announcement of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the plasticizer allowed to be added during the production process of PVC cling film is DOA. The reporter's investigation in Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and other places also found that the raw materials used by the four cling film production companies that were detected to contain plasticizers banned by the state were indeed labeled as DOA. During the interview in Jiangsu, the DOA raw material barrels of the same company were seen in the production workshops of Wuxi Xindi Paper and Plastic Products Co., Ltd. and Taicang Junshijie Packaging Materials Co., Ltd., and the raw material barrels were marked as produced by Tongxiang Chemical Co., Ltd.
At Tongxiang Chemical Co., Ltd., Xu Xiaofeng, the business manager of the company's marketing department, said that the company exclusively supplies plasticizers to Wuxi Xindi, Shanghai Junshi and Linpark, and other cling film companies. At the same time, he also admitted that the DOA they provided did contain DEHA, which was inevitable in every plasticizer production factory.
In order to verify whether what Manager Xu said was true, the reporter tested the DOA samples provided by Tongxiang Chemical Co., Ltd. and the samples of another DOA production company. The results showed that the DOA produced by these two companies did not contain DOA, but the content of DEHA was very high. It turned out that the so-called DOA was actually DEHA.
According to experts, the raw material for producing DOA is n-octanol, and the raw material for producing DEHA is isooctyl alcohol. The price of these two raw materials is very different. The price of n-octanol per ton is about 12,000 yuan, while the price of isooctyl alcohol per ton is only about 8,000 yuan. In order to reduce costs, companies use isooctyl alcohol as raw material for production. This statement was also recognized by Xu Xiaofeng, business manager of the marketing department of Tongxiang Chemical Co., Ltd. He said that in order to cope with fierce market competition, the industry is using isooctyl alcohol to produce plasticizers for cling film.
So far, the source of the plasticizer DEHA, which is banned by the state, contained in 15 brands of PVC cling film has finally been revealed. According to the regulations of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and relevant national standards, the main plasticizer allowed for PVC cling film is DOA, and the raw material of DOA is n-octanol. In order to reduce costs, upstream chemical companies that produce DOA use isooctyl alcohol, and what they actually produce is DEHA, which is banned by the state. Upstream chemical companies then sell DEHA to cling film manufacturers in the name of DOA, and ultimately produce cling film that is harmful to human health.
Reporters learned that, in fact, as early as 2005, eight years ago, the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine issued a special document to ban DEHA. In 2011, Beijing Kaifa Environmental Protection Technology Consulting Center found that PVC cling film of five companies contained DEHA. Subsequently, the media exposed it and the law enforcement department investigated and dealt with it. However, the products of the five PVC cling film companies that had the accident that year were still found to contain DEHA in this test.
In the view of food safety expert Dong Jinshi, this is some cling film manufacturers knowingly committing crimes. Although they know that plasticizers contain DEHA, they have reached a tacit understanding with upstream chemical companies and still purchase this cheap plasticizer in the name of DOA.
The reason behind the companies knowingly committing crimes is the lack of standards. As an important food packaging material, PVC cling film has never had a national standard. The biggest advantage of not having a national standard is that companies can choose their own standards, thereby avoiding the detection of plasticizers banned by the country and the restrictions that national standards may impose on the scope of use.
Food safety expert Dong Jinshi said that in 2009, the relevant agency had drafted a standard for self-adhesive cling film, covering PE, PVC and other types of cling film. The national standard for cling film, which was supposed to take effect on December 1, 2009, was postponed twice for various reasons. To this day, it is still sleeping in the file cabinet.
Currently, food cling film is divided into several categories according to the material, such as polyethylene, also known as PE cling film, and polyvinyl chloride, also known as PVC cling film. Among them, PE cling film is mainly sold in various supermarkets, while PVC cling film is mainly used for food packaging in the fresh and bulk food areas of supermarkets. In addition, various group customers such as hotels and restaurants purchase and use it more. Among all kinds of cling films, PVC has the largest market share due to its low price, about 60% to 70%.
Yang Weimin, an expert member of the Training Expert Committee of the China Packaging Federation, told reporters that due to the production process, a large amount of plasticizers, also known as plasticizers, are added to PVC cling film during production. Plasticizers are insoluble in cold water, but they will dissolve out at temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius or in grease.
After randomly investigating ten large and medium-sized supermarkets in Beijing, the reporter found that half of the supermarkets used PVC cling film to directly wrap raw meat and cooked food. Most of the salesmen believed that PVC cling film could be used as long as it was not wrapped in hot cooked food.
Experts remind consumers that it is best to buy and use PE cling film. If PVC cling film is used, it is best not to use it directly to package meat, cooked food, and foods containing grease, and it is not suitable to heat it directly in a microwave oven.
How to identify PVC cling film and PE cling film? Experts' advice to consumers is: 1. Look at the color. The whole roll with yellowish color is PVC material, and the white one is PE. 2. Rub with your hands. PE cling film generally has poor viscosity and is easy to open after rubbing with your hands, while PVC cling film has good viscosity and is not easy to unfold after rubbing with your hands. 3. Burn it. After PE cling film is ignited with fire, it will burn quickly and will not go out when leaving the fire source; while PVC cling film is not easy to ignite, will go out after leaving the fire source, and has a pungent odor.
