Thermosetting plastics

  • Apr 08, 2025

The biggest difference between thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics lies in the cross-linking process. In essence, thermosetting plastics have better mechanical strength, higher operating temperature and better dimensional stability. Many thermosetting plastics are engineering plastics and have an amorphous structure due to the cross-linking process.

Introduction

Before molding, thermosetting plastics have a chain structure like thermoplastics. During the molding process, thermosetting plastics are polymerized by heat or chemical polymerization to form a cross-linked structure. Once the reaction is complete, the polymer molecules are bonded to form a three-dimensional network structure. These cross-linked bonds will prevent the sliding between the molecular chains. As a result, the thermosetting plastic becomes a non-melting and insoluble solid. If cracking does not occur, it cannot be softened or reprocessed even if heat is added. The properties of thermosetting plastics can be imagined as a boiled egg. The yolk changes from liquid to solid, but cannot be converted back to liquid.

Thermosetting plastics are usually sold as liquid monomer-polymer mixtures, or partially polymerized molding compounds. Thermosetting plastics are injected into the mold cavity from an uncured state and polymerized by heating or chemical mixture under pressure or without pressure to fix the shape. Thermosetting plastics are usually added with fillers or reinforcing materials such as minerals, lime, glass fiber to enhance properties, such as shrinkage control, chemical resistance, shock resistance, insulation, heat insulation or cost reduction. The finer the mesh of the structure, the better the heat resistance and chemical resistance. Epoxy resin and phenolic resin are common thermosetting plastics. Thermosetting plastics are often used in products such as ICs.
