Chinanews.com, May 1, According to the website of the National Bureau of Statistics, in April 2013, China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) was 50.6%, down 0.3 percentage points from the previous month.

By enterprise size, the PMI of large enterprises was 51.0%, down 0.4 percentage points from the previous month; the PMI of medium-sized enterprises was 50.7%, up 0.4 percentage points from the previous month; the PMI of small enterprises was 47.6%, down 1.7 percentage points from the previous month.

By region, the PMI of the eastern region was 51.3%, 0.7 percentage points higher than China, significantly better than other regions; the PMI of the western region was 50.1%, 0.5 percentage points lower than China; the PMI of the central and northeastern regions was 49.6%, 1.0 percentage points lower than China, falling below the critical point.

In April 2013, among the five sub-indices constituting the manufacturing PMI, one remained unchanged and four declined.

The production index was 52.6%, down 0.1 percentage point from the previous month, indicating that the production of manufacturing enterprises continued to grow, with a slightly slower growth rate. In terms of industries, the production index of 13 industries, including electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, textile industry, non-metallic mineral products industry, chemical fiber and rubber and plastic products industry, was above the critical point, and the production volume increased; the production index of non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry was above the critical point, and the production volume did not change much compared with the previous month; the production index of seven industries, including petroleum processing and coking industry, agricultural and sideline food processing industry, ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry, food and wine, beverage and refined tea manufacturing industry, was below the critical point, and the production volume declined.

The new order index was 51.7%, down 0.6 percentage point from the previous month, and it has been above the critical point for 7 consecutive months, indicating that the product orders from customers in the manufacturing industry continued to grow, but the growth rate narrowed. In terms of industries, the new order index of 15 industries, including electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, non-metallic mineral products, textiles, chemical fibers and rubber and plastic products, was above the critical point, indicating that market demand was growing; the new order index of 6 industries, including petroleum processing and coking, agricultural and sideline food processing, and ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing, was below the critical point, indicating that market demand fell. The survey results showed that the new export order index, which reflects the foreign trade of the manufacturing industry, was 48.6%, down 2.3 percentage points from the previous month, falling below the critical point, indicating that the export volume of manufacturing products has turned from rising to falling; the import index was 48.7%, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous month, and continued to be below the critical point, indicating that the import volume of raw materials used in the manufacturing industry continued to decrease.

The raw material inventory index was 47.5%, the same as the previous month, and it has been below the critical point for three consecutive months, indicating that the inventory of raw materials in the manufacturing industry has continued to decrease. In terms of different industries, the raw material inventory index of metal products, electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, computer communication electronic equipment and instrumentation manufacturing, food, wine, beverage and refined tea manufacturing was above the critical point, and the raw material inventory increased; the raw material inventory index of wood processing and furniture manufacturing was at the critical point, and the raw material inventory remained the same as last month; the raw material inventory index of 16 industries, including ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing, chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing, non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing, and tobacco products, was below the critical point, and the raw material inventory decreased.

The employment index was 49.0%, down 0.8 percentage points from last month. In terms of different industries, only the employment index of electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, computer communication electronic equipment and instrumentation manufacturing, chemical fiber and rubber plastic products, and textile industry was above the critical point, and the employment of enterprises increased; the employment index of 17 industries, including railway, ship, aerospace and transportation equipment manufacturing, tobacco products, agricultural and sideline food processing, and chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing, was below the critical point, and the employment of enterprises decreased to varying degrees.

The supplier delivery time index was 50.8%, down 0.3 percentage points from the previous month, and continued to be above the critical point, indicating that the delivery time of raw material suppliers in the manufacturing industry has accelerated compared with the previous month.

The main raw material purchase price index was 40.1%, down 10.5 percentage points from the previous month, and fell below the critical point, indicating that the purchase price of raw materials in the manufacturing industry has turned from rising to falling, and the decline is significant. In terms of industries, among the 21 industries, only the main raw material purchase price index of the food, wine, beverage and refined tea manufacturing industry was above the critical point, and the procurement cost of enterprises increased. The main raw material purchase price index of the remaining 20 industries was below the critical point, among which the main raw material purchase prices of the petroleum processing and coking industry, ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry, chemical fiber and rubber plastic products industry, electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing industry, non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry and other industries fell significantly.

The production and operation activity expectation index was 59.3%, down 6.2 percentage points from the previous month, indicating that the proportion of manufacturing enterprises that are optimistic about the production and operation activities in the next three months has declined.
