Radiation resistant engineering plastics

  • Apr 08, 2025

Radiation-resistant engineering plastics are special engineering plastics that have their density significantly increased by adding specific additives. This high-density thermoplastic not only has a metallic texture, but also retains the processing characteristics of plastics.

Related Introduction

Radiation-resistant engineering plastics are widely used in many fields due to their unique properties. In particular, in the field of medical products, people are actively seeking materials that can replace lead due to environmental protection needs. These high-specific gravity additives not only increase the density of plastics, but also give them radiation resistance. Injection molded parts, catheter parts or sheet materials made of radiation-resistant compounds can absorb X-rays without being penetrated. During radiotherapy or surgery, the use of such soft and lightweight sheets helps to protect equipment and personnel from direct exposure and scattering of X-rays. In addition, catheters containing barium sulfate can be implanted in the body and their position can be tracked by fluoroscopy or X-ray imaging technology. Baxter Healthcare's instruments used in heart valve repair surgery, including reusable handles and disposable snap-on closures, are all made of polycarbonate special modified engineering plastics. The plug used for visualization uses an embedded injection molding process to ensure that it can be visualized under X-rays; and the plug that can withstand high-temperature steam sterilization is made of polyethersulfone, thus ensuring the safety and reliability of the entire device.
