Basic Introduction

In 1905, Baekeland, an American chemist, once put phenol and formaldehyde in a flask, used acid as a catalyst, and then heated it for reaction. He found that the reactants in the flask gradually turned into a yellow jelly, similar to the resin on peach trees and pine trees, firmly attached to the wall of the flask. Baekeland rinsed it with water many times, but couldn't wash it off. Later, he baked it at high temperature to dissolve it, but the jelly turned into a hard block after baking. This situation gave Baekeland an inspiration. He thought, this thing is not afraid of water and does not melt. Can't it be a good material?

Bakeland's contribution is that for the first time in human history, a small molecule compound was made and plastic was synthesized by pure chemical methods. This plastic is not only the ancestor of synthetic plastics, but also has a very wide range of uses today and continues to be valued by people.
