Titanium dioxide: full force behind

In the beginning, we are 40 years later than the world's first titanium dioxide factory, but through unremitting efforts, China's titanium dioxide production ranks first in the world for 11 consecutive years, and fully toward the fast track of green development. —

From 1956 public-private joint venture Shanghai Huaheng Chemical plant was born, after 63 years of development, China's titanium dioxide industry from scratch, from small to large. By 2018, it has 39 full-process production enterprises, with output of 2,954,300 tons, export volume of 908,300 tons, production capacity of 3.4 million tons, annual output has been ranked first in the world for 11 consecutive years, and has become a net exporter of titanium dioxide. Although in the beginning, we than Norway built the world's first titanium dioxide factory late for a full 40 years, but through unremitting efforts, we have come from behind, and in the titanium dioxide power to forge ahead.

In 1957, the Ministry of Chemical Industry Tianjin Institute of Chemical Industry began to organize the power system research and development of pigment grade anatase titanium dioxide production process, 1958 in Tianjin, Jinan, Wuxi and other places to establish a number of non-pigment grade small titanium dioxide factories. 1962 ~ 1963, Tianjin Research Institute of Chemical industry pigment grade anatase titanium dioxide expansion test results, in Shanghai Huaheng Chemical plant and Tianjin with biochemical factory for industrial trial production, and through the Ministry of Chemical industry and Shanghai Chemical Industry Bureau jointly organized identification, for China's sulfuric acid anatase titanium dioxide production laid the process foundation.

In the mid-1980s, many small titanium dioxide plants were built all over the country, with the number as many as 108, mainly concentrated in Henan, Guangxi, Jiangsu and other provinces, and most of them are township enterprises. These enterprises are not only small in scale, but also backward in technology and equipment, poor product quality, and serious pollution of the "three wastes".

In order to limit the township enterprises that do not have the production conditions, in 1988, the Ministry of Chemical Industry formulated a policy, not allowed to build 3,500 tons/year below the scale of titanium dioxide enterprises, and in 1991, the implementation of titanium dioxide production license system.

In the formulation of the "seven five" plan, the Ministry of Chemical industry and put forward the "sulfuric acid method and chlorination of two processes, capital construction and technological transformation, technology introduction and China's technology development" development policy, a batch of 10,000 tons of titanium dioxide factory began to build, the introduction of technology also began to orderly.

The digestion and absorption of the introduction of projects, especially the successful production of complete sets of technical equipment introduced by 404 plant and Chongqing Titanium Dioxide, has played a role in promoting and demonstrating the technological progress and large-scale installation of China's titanium dioxide industry.

China's titanium dioxide production is mainly based on sulfuric acid method, the substantial development of the whole industry began in 1998. According to the national chemical productivity promotion center titanium dioxide branch center director, titanium dioxide industry technology innovation strategic alliance secretary General Bi Sheng introduced, before the 1990s, China has not a 10,000 tons of titanium dioxide production enterprises, to 2016, Henan Longpython Bailian total output of 588,000 tons, the first in Asia, the world's fourth; Before the 1990s, China only Nanjing a titanium dioxide factory to produce a small amount of rutile titanium dioxide, to 2018 China rutile titanium dioxide production as high as more than 2,292,800 tons, accounting for 77.61% of the national total output; Before the 1990s, there was no chlorination titanium dioxide factory in China, and by 2018, there were 4 chlorination titanium dioxide factories, with a production capacity of 210,000 tons and an actual production of 134,000 tons.

With the gradual increase of production capacity, the international status of China's titanium dioxide industry is also rising. By 2002, the total production capacity of the industry reached 390,000 tons, surpassing Japan to become the world's second largest producer of titanium dioxide; By 2009, the total production capacity reached 1.8 million tons, becoming the world's largest producer. At the same time of developing production, the whole industry has achieved remarkable results in energy conservation, environmental protection and cleaner production. A large number of new processes and technologies for energy conservation and environmental protection have been widely applied in many enterprises, and some technologies have reached the first in China and the international advanced level.

In terms of environmental protection and cleaner production, acid hydrolysis tail gas treatment, acid hydrolysis tail slag reuse, titanium liquid low-temperature multi-effect concentration, calcining kiln tail gas waste heat reuse, MVR low-temperature evaporation technology, titanium gypsum pressing technology have been widely used in the industry. In 2017, Shandong Daun Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. and Qianjiang Fangyuan Titanium White Co., Ltd. were awarded the title of "Green Demonstration Factory" by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In the development of the industrial chain, the titanium dioxide enterprises according to their own conditions and the characteristics of the surrounding environment, gradually create conditions to take the road of co-production, to achieve reduction, resource recycling development. Sichuan Longpython, Shandong Dongjia, Shandong Daoen, Qianjiang Fangyuan, Jiangxi Tianguang and a large number of backbone enterprises have launched sulfur. At present, the product quality improvement of China's titanium dioxide enterprises has gradually accelerated, Longboa Baillian, Shandong Dongjia Group, Pangang Vanadium titanium, Qianjiang Fangyuan and other a large number of enterprises of coatings, plastics special sulfuric acid rutile titanium dioxide quality has reached or close to the international first-line product level, recognized by the high-end market, So that China in the production of titanium dioxide big country to the road to power has taken a new step.
