"Metal plastic" is a new composite material developed by Chinese scientists, which has the characteristics of both metal and plastic. This new material has important application potential in many fields, especially in nano- and micro-processing and replication. It is expected that in the future, it can make the price of auto parts close to that of plastic products.
For a long time, the international scientific community has been exploring how to give metal materials the glass-forming ability of plastic, which is a research topic that has attracted much attention. After years of unremitting efforts, Chinese scientists have finally successfully developed this new material with broad development prospects.
"Metal plastic" not only inherits the general properties of metals, but also has some characteristics of plastic. In hot water, it can be easily shaped like plasticine; once cooled to room temperature, it can show the excellent characteristics of general metallic glass. This unique property makes it an ideal material for nano- and micro-processing and replication, and also indicates a significant reduction in the manufacturing cost of auto parts in the future.
With the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Wang Weihua's research team from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, completed this research. Their work was published in the authoritative academic journal Physical Review Letters and was highly praised by Nature magazine.
